Street is located one block west of Washington Park. It is one
of four row houses built in the early 1840's on lots south of
the intersection of Washington and 1st Streets. The
original deed stipulated that the new landowners must build 4
good brick buildings within a short time frame; if not, the land
would revert to the seller.
This building was
originally constructed as a three family; city records indicate
that as many as a dozen working adults resided there during
Troy's heyday. By the l980's the building had fallen into
disrepair, and was abandoned in the 1990's. A century of poorly
designed alterations cut through main bearing beams,
contributing to a collapsed roof which exposed the interior to
the elements.
In September 2003
Michael and Carol Gerrish purchased 159 from George Ruta, who
had bought the building from the city. They completed the rehab
begun by Mr. Ruta, converting the building to a one family
residence. Much of the interior had to be replaced; the building
is essentially new construction within the original shell. To
